What services will WeatherBug Mobile Alerts Provide?

Subscribers receive text-based messages providing severe weather watches and warnings based on their selected ZIP Code. In addition, subscribers can also select up to 3 forecasts sent to their phones on Monday, Wednesday, and/or Friday. Premium subscribers get more forecasts (daily) and access to the WeatherBug Plus premium desktop application.

WeatherBug Mobile Alerts provides 23 alerts from the National Weather Service, including:

How much does this service cost?

The basic WeatherBug Mobile Alerts SMS service is billed at $2.99 per month. The enhanced service includes WeatherBug Plus desktop and more forecast features and is $4.99 per month.

Which mobile phone companies support WeatherBug Mobile Alerts?

Currently all the major mobile phone companies support WeatherBug Mobile Alerts — Alltel, Boost Mobile, Cingular (and former AT&T Wireless customers), Nextel, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon.

Others should be available shortly.

Which mobile phones work with this service?

Your mobile phone must be able to send AND receive text messages to work with the WeatherBug Mobile Alerts service. For Nextel the phone must support WAP, which most phones sold do; they must also have WAP access as part of their service plan. If in doubt you should check with your mobile phone company to verify that both your phone and account are enabled for messaging.

How can I change my ZIP Code to receive alerts?

To change your ZIP Code for receiving WeatherBug Mobile Alerts, you can go to the My Account Login section at http://www.weatherbug.com/mobilealerts.

Or, you can simply send a text message from your phone with the word "ZIP" and the new 5-digit ZIP Code (separated by a space) to 46284 (GoBUG).

How long will it take for forecasts and warnings to be delivered once they have been issued?

Messages will normally be delivered immediately upon issuance. However factors outside of WeatherBug's control mean delivery times to you can not be guaranteed. The most prevalent of these factors are the mobile phone companies' service level guarantee limitations, such as network outages, roaming, out of service area, line and network traffic issues.

In the event of failure to deliver at time of issue, messages will normally be held on the mobile phone company's network and delivered some time after your phone becomes available within the service area.

Can I change the time I receive the forecast messages?

Currently, we do not currently provide this capability. These forecasts are sent with a 4 hour-window based on availability. Each forecast message includes the forecast for the next three days.

How do I cancel my subscription?

You can cancel your subscription in one of two ways:

  • By sending the message "STOP" to the short code 46284 (GOBUG).
  • By logging into the My Account Login section Here.

Note: Typically mobile phone companies will bill until the end of the month or your billing cycle.

How do Subscribers pay for the service?

For the majority of mobile phone companies, billing is to the subscriber's wireless account. However the Mobile Alerts service for Nextel subscribers does require use of a credit card. Nextel and their partners are responsible for processing credit card charges.

How long will subscribers receive the service once they sign-up?

Subscribers will continue to receive the service indefinitely until they cancel.

Will refunds be provided if a subscriber cancels the service within any one month period?

Under normal circumstances it is our understanding that refunds are not available. Please remember that it is the mobile phone companies who control billing. Subscribers should contact their mobile phone company's customer service.

If the Subscriber wishes to query how much they have been charged for WeatherBug Mobile, what should they do?

Contact their mobile phone company's customer service department.

Does WeatherBug provide customer support?

All billing inquires should be handled through your mobile phone company. For all other customer support inquires, please contact WeatherBug's Mobile Customer Support team via email or call 1-800-223-2145.

Can Subscribers opt to receive this service by any other means than via their wireless account?

No. For billing purposes a valid cell phone account must be associated with the subscription and messages will only be sent to that number.

There was severe weather in my area, why didn't I receive a message?

If you did not get an alert, please note that ONLY alerts issued by the National Weather Service for your ZIP will be sent. "Severe weather" described by a TV weatherman may not be an actual NWS alert.

Next, check your settings at http://www.weatherbug.com/mobilealerts (top right corner, click My Account) and login in using your cell #- make sure your alerts are set to HIGH and not MEDIUM to get all the alerts.

This could be attributed to other factors including: out of service area, wrong ZIP Code setting, poor signal strength, network outage, etc.

I received more than 1 severe weather alert, why?

Sometimes the NWS will update warnings to account for changed times and other factors, and that may give the appearance of the same warning being issued on multiple occasions. It is also entirely possible for a warning to be issued, expire and then another warning of the same type be issued.

I have forgotten my password and or e-mail address what do I do?

Please visit the registration site at http://station.earthnetworks.com/mobile/mobile-weather-alerts-registration.html, and click through to change your preferences. You will then be given the opportunity to receive a reminder of your password.
